After a national search, Eric S. Holmboe, MD, a seasoned leader in advancing outcomes-based education and effecting policy change across the medical education continuum, has been named CEO of Intealth™. He joins Intealth on January 2, 2024.

Dr. Holmboe comes to Intealth from the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), where he is Chief, Research, Milestones Development and Evaluation Officer. He also is Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the Yale University School of Medicine and the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences, and Adjunct Professor of Medical Education at the Feinberg School of Medicine at Northwestern University. He succeeds William W. Pinsky, MD, who retires as Intealth CEO at the end of this year.

Dr. Holmboe joins Intealth at a strategic juncture for the organization, following a multi-year business transformation that includes successful integration of ECFMG® and FAIMER®. The result of this transformation is a robust, integrated portfolio of services that enhance the education and training of health care professionals around the world, verify their qualifications required to practice, support international physicians in U.S. graduate medical education, and inform the development of health workforce policies worldwide. Dr. Holmboe brings a wealth of expertise and experience to fuel Intealth’s goal of advancing quality in health care education worldwide in order to improve health and health care for all.

Dr. Holmboe previously served as the Associate Program Director, Yale Primary Care Internal Medicine Residency Program; Director of Student Clinical Assessment, Yale School of Medicine; and Assistant Director of the Yale Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars program. Before joining Yale in 2000, he served as Division Chief of General Internal Medicine at the National Naval Medical Center. Dr. Holmboe retired from the U.S. Naval Reserve in 2005. He served as the Chief Medical Officer at the American Board of Internal Medicine from 2009 until 2014.
His research interests include studying factors and interventions affecting the quality of health care, methods in the assessment of clinical competence, and the relationship between medical education and health care outcomes. His professional memberships include the American College of Physicians, where he is a Master of the College; Society of General Internal Medicine; and AMEE, the International Association for Health Professions Education. He is an honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians in London, honorary Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada, and honorary Fellow of the Academy of Medical Educators.
Dr. Holmboe is a graduate of Franklin and Marshall College and the University of Rochester School of Medicine. He completed his residency and chief residency at Yale-New Haven Hospital and was a Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholar at Yale University.
The Intealth CEO search was co-chaired by Craig Brater, MD, President of the Regenstrief Foundation and Vice President for Programs of the Walther Cancer Foundation, and Anne Marie Irani, MD, Professor Emerita of Pediatrics of the Children’s Hospital of Richmond at VCU. “Dr. Holmboe’s demonstrated leadership in advancing health professions education in both domestic and international contexts is critical to Intealth’s continued success,” noted Dr. Brater. “His deep appreciation for the power and impact of global collaboration and local partnerships is fundamental to Intealth’s approach,” continued Dr. Irani.
